A step-by-step guide to claiming your tax credits

Published in on Sunday, April 12 2009 by Ideal Debt Solutions

If you have made the wise decision to do all you can to maximise income through tax credits in an attempt to avoid the vicious circle of debt, you will need to follow these simple steps:

1. Order a tax credits claim form by phoning the Tax Credit Helpline on 0845 300 3900. Do this as soon as you think you qualify because tax credits can only be backdated up to three months from the claim date.
2. If you are an individual living alone, proceed to step 3. If you are living with your partner, decide who will be making your joint claim.
3. Fill in the form accurately and in full. Make sure you use black ink and write neatly inside the boxes using capital letters unless informed otherwise.
4. Think about approaching a company familiar with providing advice about debt management for help with the process.
5. Send the form back by post when you are satisfied that the information provided is correct (do not lie!)

If you decide to fill out the form without seeking advice from an expert familiar with guiding individuals through processes such as these, bear in mind that you will need to have the following information to hand:

• NI number
• Child Benefit reference number
• Details of childcare payments you make (as long as you are using a registered/approved provider)
• Details of other benefits you receive
• Details of your income for the last tax year plus your P60/wage slips for that period
• Bank account details

No matter how accurately and thoroughly you fill in your claim form, there are instances in which the government pays too much or not enough. If this happens, the government will make appropriate changes to your payments. However, remember that if you lie on your form, you may be penalised financially.
